Instagram is building a better messaging experience.

Instagram is getting a new feature where you will be able to turn off read receipts, just like WhatsApp. Here’s how it works.

Instagram has been improving its direct messaging (DM) features to provide a more comprehensive experience. However, one of the features that has been missing from Instagram is the ability to turn on read receipts, something that popular messaging apps like WhatsApp already offer.

Fortunately, this is about to change. Instagram is introducing a new feature that allows users to turn off read receipts, similar to WhatsApp. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this upcoming feature on his Instagram channel. He mentioned that the feature is currently being tested and will be available soon. According to Zuckerberg, this feature will allow users to disable read receipts on Instagram DMs, providing more flexibility in communication.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, also shared screenshots demonstrating how the feature works. When you disable ‘read receipts,’ Instagram will no longer notify the other person that you have seen their message. This can be useful for those who sometimes forget to reply to messages promptly. However, if you disable read receipts and use Vanish mode, the other person will still be able to see if you have viewed their messages on Instagram.

The exact release date for this feature is not yet known, but since Zuckerberg mentioned that it will be available soon and is currently being tested, it is likely to roll out in the near future. Once the feature is implemented, you can leave people on read without them knowing.

In other news, Instagram is introducing the option to add song lyrics to Instagram Reels, similar to stories. When editing your Reel, you can now tap the music icon and swipe left to add lyrics.
