A California jury has awarded $332 million to a man who filed a lawsuit against Monsanto, claiming that his cancer was caused by using the company’s Roundup weedkiller for several decades.
The verdict was reached in a San Diego Superior Court, in favor of Mike Dennis, a 57-year-old resident of Carlsbad who was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2020.
Dennis believes that his illness is directly related to the active ingredient in Roundup, known as glyphosate.
Although Dennis has undergone treatment and is currently in remission, there is no cure for his condition. His doctors have informed him that there is a possibility of the cancer returning.
The jury found that Monsanto, which is now a division of pharmaceutical and biotechnology company Bayer, failed to provide proper warnings about the risks associated with Roundup. However, the jury also ruled in Bayer’s favor by stating that the product’s design was not defective and the company was not negligent.
In terms of damages, Dennis was awarded $7 million in compensatory damages and $325 million in punitive damages.
Bayer, in response to the verdict, stated that it believes the decision is unfounded and plans to appeal. The company also emphasized that it believes there were legal and evidentiary errors made during the trial.
Bayer acquired Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018 and has been grappling with numerous claims and lawsuits related to Roundup. As part of an effort to address these issues, Bayer announced in 2020 that it would pay up to $10.9 billion to settle around 125,000 filed and unfiled claims.
