Farewell to DVD and Blu-ray Movies at Best Buy

Best Buy has announced that it will no longer sell DVD and Blu-ray movies starting in 2024. This decision applies to both physical stores and online sales. Sales of these physical formats will continue through the 2023 holiday season and then cease. Best Buy states that this move is a reflection of the changing habits of consumers when it comes to watching movies at home.

According to a Best Buy spokesperson, “The way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago. Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech.”

This decision was made nine months ago. As a result, Best Buy’s exclusivity for “Steelbook” titles from various studios will be eliminated. Some studios, like Paramount, have already started moving their exclusives to Amazon under the “Steelbook” imprint.

It is worth noting that Walmart remains a major player in the DVD sales market, holding a 45% market share, according to The Digital Bits.

In addition to Best Buy, streaming giant Netflix has also recently stopped providing DVDs, with its last discs being shipped out at the end of September.

As technology advances and streaming becomes more popular, physical media like DVDs and Blu-rays are becoming less relevant. While there is still a market for these formats, it seems that the future of home entertainment lies in digital streaming services. Best Buy’s decision is a reflection of these changing consumer preferences and the need to adapt to the evolving landscape of the industry.

As we say goodbye to DVDs and Blu-rays at Best Buy, let’s embrace the convenience and accessibility of streaming services, which offer a vast library of movies and TV shows at our fingertips. The transition to digital media may be bittersweet for some, but it opens up new possibilities and experiences in the world of home entertainment.
