Report: WhatsApp Could Soon Allow Users to Secure Locked Chats With Secret Passwords

In May of this year, WhatsApp introduced the Chat Lock feature, which allows users to lock specific chats using their fingerprint, facelock, or passcodes. Now, according to reports, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform is testing a new secret code feature that will provide users with even more control over their locked chats. This upcoming security feature will allow users to choose a custom password for their protected chat folder. The feature has been spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta v2.23.21.9, which is available through the Google Play Beta program.

According to WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo, the secret code feature will add an additional layer of security for sensitive conversations. Users will be able to enter the secret code to access their locked chats from the app’s search bar. The feature will also reportedly support locking chats from companion devices.

The update is expected to be rolled out through the Google Play Beta program. However, it is currently not available for testers and will be released in a future update of the app.

WhatsApp has provided a preview of the secret code creation feature, suggesting that users can use a word or a simple emoji for quick access. Additionally, users will have the flexibility to change or remove the secret code at any time.

The Chat Lock feature was released in May for both Android and iOS users. It allows users to keep their messages and conversations private and secure by locking them with a passcode, fingerprint, or face unlock. Locked chats are moved to a separate folder to ensure privacy, and notifications from these chats do not reveal the sender’s name or message preview.

Unique Perspective:

With the increasing importance of data privacy and security, it is encouraging to see WhatsApp continuously working on enhancing its features to provide more control and protection for users. The introduction of a secret password feature to secure locked chats adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that sensitive conversations remain private. This update will undoubtedly be welcomed by users who value their privacy and want to have more control over their chat security. As technology evolves and cyber threats become more sophisticated, it is crucial for messaging platforms to adapt and provide robust security measures to stay ahead of potential breaches. WhatsApp’s efforts in this regard are commendable and will hopefully inspire other platforms to prioritize user privacy and data protection.
