FanDuel Sportsbook Suffers $20 Million Loss on Prop Bet Parlay Involving Field Goals

FanDuel Sportsbook incurred a loss of $20 million as sharp players took advantage of the 200:1 odds offered on a prop bet parlay. The bet revolved around every team in the NFL’s Week 2 Sunday afternoon games making a field goal.

The sports gambling app promoted the parlay, which required every team playing in the 1 p.m., 4:05 p.m., and 4:25 p.m. games to make at least one field goal for bettors to win.

All 24 teams met this requirement, resulting in FanDuel stating that it will pay out over $20 million to those who took the deal.

The parlay gained significant attention from gambling influencers on social media, with an influencer named @JDGoldboys posting about it. His initial post, in which he mentioned that the bet was worth a dollar, has received 2.3 million views on X. Later, he shared his own FanDuel winnings, revealing a profit of $318,300 after betting $1,584 on two separate slips for the parlay.

The 200:1 odds offered were particularly appealing, with a $1 winning bet resulting in a $201 payout. @JDGoldboys also noted that competing app DraftKings had the same bet but with less generous 30:1 odds.

Unique Perspective:
While FanDuel Sportsbook suffered a significant financial loss with this prop bet parlay, it highlights the growing popularity of sports gambling and the influence of social media in promoting such bets. The power of influencers like @JDGoldboys can lead to a massive influx of bets, resulting in unexpected outcomes for bookmakers. This serves as a reminder for sportsbooks to carefully evaluate the odds they offer and to be prepared for the potential impact of viral bets promoted on social media platforms.
