Google has unveiled a new ‘Proofread’ feature for beta users of the Gboard keyboard for Android. Here’s how it functions.

Earlier this year at Google I/O 2023, the company made it clear that it is committed to expanding its generative AI capabilities by introducing new AI-focused features across its product range.

Now, Google has rolled out a new ‘Proofread’ feature for beta users of the Gboard keyboard for Android. According to 9to5Google, this feature is currently available starting with Gboard version 13.4 and can be accessed through Gboard’s toolbar.

As the name suggests, the feature is designed to proofread your text for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Users can easily do this with a tap, as Google explains. However, it’s worth noting that to proofread your text, it needs to send the text to itself and process it to provide suggestions for grammar and writing improvements.

If you have concerns about sharing your text data with Google, it may be best to avoid using this feature. Nonetheless, this functionality can be helpful in quickly identifying errors in your text with the assistance of generative AI, eliminating the need to switch to a separate application like Google’s own Bard or another generative AI-based chatbot like ChatGPT, as well as traditional grammar correction software.

As for its availability, it is unclear when the feature will be rolled out widely. However, since it is already accessible to beta users, the full rollout may not be too far away and could happen soon.

In related news, Google has introduced new formatting features for Google Keep. This will allow users to format their notes in various ways to enhance organization. Users will be able to customize their text by applying bold, underline, italicize, and heading styles.
