Chhattisgarh Mulls Offering Supplementary Exams for Students Who Failed in Two Subjects – Times of India
The higher education department of the Chhattisgarh government has established a committee to amend the university ordinance and allow students who have not passed two subjects to participate in supplementary exams. Currently, the rules only permit students failing in one subject to sit for supplementary exams, while failing in more than one subject requires them to reappear for the entire examination.
An official at the committee meeting informed that the state government is supportive of the students’ demand, and an official order is expected to be issued within the next day or two. However, this relaxation will only apply for one academic session.
Professor Sachchidananda Shukla, Vice Chancellor of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (PRSU), expressed his support for the students. He believes that considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education, students should be given this opportunity for a year, but not for an extended period.
This decision is a response to the recent shift from online mode examinations to offline mode examinations. This shift has significantly influenced examination results, with universities reporting comparatively weaker results. Many students have struggled in two subjects, leading to the extension of eligibility for supplementary exams to cover two subjects. Approximately 80,000 students are expected to benefit from this change.
The existing regulations only allow for supplementary exams in a single subject. However, an upcoming amendment will expand the scope of supplementary exams to include two subjects. Universities such as PRSU, Hemchand Yadav University Durg, Bilaspur University, and Raigarh University have faced academic challenges this year, with a significant number of students struggling in two subjects.
In the 1990s, students taking PRSU examinations were allowed to take supplementary exams in two subjects. However, the rule was later amended to only allow supplementary exams for failures in a single subject. The Department of Higher Education has drafted proposals for this change, and it is expected to be presented to the Chancellor for final approval.
