IT Ministry Officials Announce No Ban on Import of Laptops and Tablets, Introduce New Licensing System – News18

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) officials have clarified that there will be no ban or restriction on the import of laptops, tablets, and computers. Instead, a licensing mechanism will be imposed. The central government issued a notification on August 3, stating that companies or traders can import IT hardware after obtaining a license. This includes laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers. To obtain a license, companies must apply online through the portal prepared by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). The license is expected to be awarded within one to two days, or even as quickly as 5 to 10 minutes if the application details are correctly filled out. It is anticipated that a full-year licensing mechanism will be implemented.

PROTECTING DIGITAL NAGRIKS

The government is committed to ensuring secure and responsible internet access for all users in India. With the expansion of the internet and an increase in cyber security incidents, the government aims to protect the digital citizens and minimize data breaches. An official stated that a licensing system will be implemented to address the cybersecurity concerns associated with devices used by the citizens.

Another official emphasized the importance of securing devices as every citizen becomes a digital citizen. The government is taking action to address these concerns, and the new import regulations are just the beginning of initiatives to safeguard digital citizens.

Hardware plays a crucial role in ensuring security, as IT gear with inbuilt security flaws can compromise critical data. It is essential to address such vulnerabilities.

PLI 2.0: AUG 30 IS THE DEADLINE

The government is simultaneously working on multiple areas to enhance India’s self-sufficiency in electronics production and IT hardware. The government has introduced the PLI 2.0 initiative, aimed at boosting the manufacturing of IT hardware. This initiative is expected to result in significant output, additional investment in electronics manufacturing, and the creation of new employment opportunities.

Already, 44 companies have registered for the PLI 2.0 IT hardware plan, and applications from two companies, including HP Inc., have been filed before July 31. The deadline for submitting applications is August 30.

The government expects significant investments in the next five to six years. It has provided additional time for local manufacturers to complete the application process. The objective is to track the products coming into India and boost domestic manufacturing through the PLI initiative.

Industry experts have expressed optimism about the decision. A managing director at Optiemus Electronics believes that this move will boost indigenous electronics manufacturing and contribute to the Make in India vision. The Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) believes that the new licensing system will provide secure digital access to citizens and will benefit trusted industry partners and digital consumers alike.
